For years, herons, egrets, ibis, anhingas, and other birds have nested at Naples Zoo – drawn by the natural protection against tree-climbing predators provided by the giant reptiles of Alligator Bay. We saw Naples Zoo’s picture of the black bear eating at the picnic table so we had to go and check it out for ourselves. The red-footed tortoise is named for the colorful markings on its limbs and face. The species can reach 14 inches in length. Its greenish-brown shell displays upraised points on the central plates. The tortoises are omnivores, feeding on fruits, greens, plants, vegetables and dead animals it encounters.
